In the broader view of social capital theory, the concept predicts that higher associational activities inside a community are able to foster a sense of civic engagement where cooperation, reciprocity and mutual trust are developed and used in order to solve collective action and asymmetric information problems.

Existing studies have suggested that social capital has considerable benefits for a range of economic and sociological outcomes. These purported benefits, and the concept behind social capital, are not new but rooted in the work of early economic and sociologic thinkers.

The thesis used social capital as a theoretical framework and lens on the data with authors such as Putnam and Lin being key. Salford City Football Club (SCFC) was used as a vehicle for this study. During the period of study, SCFC entered an important time of growth and online fame.

Overall, the thesis provides support for an organisationally embedded view of social capital development and offers a rare example of critical realist research on social capital.

By clarifying the mechanism between organisational social capital and social innovativeness of Australian social enterprises, this thesis model contributes to a richer understanding of the organisational social capital theory of innovativeness from a strategic perspective.
