PhD candidates have an employment contract with a department, research center or institute at Tilburg Law School. They are appointed for at least 32 hours a week to write their PhD thesis. They usually write their PhD thesis in three or four years.

A PhD in Law is not to be confused with a Juris Doctor, which is a professional degree preparing students to practice. A wide range of research areas is available for a PhD Law program, including international law, comparative law, human rights law, maritime law, international environmental law, and more.

PhD in Law As a PhD candidate, you will carry out original research under the guidance of two supervisors and produce an original thesis of approximately 100,000 words. For the first twelve months, or eighteen months if part-time, you will be enrolled as a provisional PhD candidate.

Bangor School of Law welcomes applications from suitably qualified graduates to read for the degrees of PhD, MPhil and LLM Res by research. For a PhD degree, you are expected to present the results of your research in a thesis which represents a significant original contribution to knowledge in the subject area studied, and to undergo a viva voce examination.

Please note: we do not generally have the expertise to supervise PhD proposals that are exclusively in a jurisdiction outside UK, EU or international law. We have many expert supervisors in comparative, international and regional law but if your proposal is only to study the law in your home country, we may not be able to offer you supervision.

Course Overview. We welcome applications for PhD research degrees in all aspects of law and legal studies at the Law School. For students who wish to study for a shorter period, we also offer a two-year MPhil research degree.
